Logistics invoices often pile on surcharges — fuel, residential delivery, peak season, remote areas, and more — adding 30–50% to the quoted rate. QLS charges one: fuel. It’s the largest variable cost in air freight and is set by global markets, so we pass actual cost changes through as a separate line item rather than inflating the base rate.
When fuel drops, the surcharge drops. When it rises, you see why. Fuel is the only variable — everything else is included in the base rate.
Surcharge by weight, by month.
We publish each month’s fuel surcharge by weight bracket. Heavier parcels carry more air-freight cost, so the surcharge scales with weight.

Not all cost components are impacted equally by fuel prices — clearance cost is unaffected, while air freight is most impacted. That’s why the surcharge does not equal the increase in fuel price.
How we calculate it.

In the final week of a month, we calculate our actual cost to ship a parcel in each weight bracket from China to the US.

Each weight bracket is impacted differently, with the largest impact on the heaviest weights. To simplify the QLS Fuel Surcharge, we calculate a weighted average surcharge for wider ranges, from 0 to 3,500 grams.

We repeat this on a monthly basis, setting the next month's surcharge based on the end of the previous month's actual costs.
